How many lights do you need per foot of Christmas tree?

Plan about 100 mini lights per foot of tree height. A 7 foot tree takes about 700 mini lights. For a fuller, brighter tree, use about 150 per foot, or about 1,050 lights. To get strands, divide that total by the count printed on your box and round up.

The rule: 100 mini lights per foot, 150 for a fuller look

A common rule of thumb is about 100 mini lights for every foot of tree height. Measure the tree itself, from the lowest branches to the tip. Leave out the stand and the topper.

For a 7 foot tree, that is 7 times 100, or about 700 mini lights. That gives a soft, even glow. If you like a tree that looks lit from the inside, use about 150 per foot. For the same 7 foot tree that is about 1,050 lights.

Pick the lower number for a slim tree or a room with lamps on. Pick the higher number for a wide, full tree or a dark corner where the tree is the main light. If you are unsure, plan for 100 per foot and keep one extra strand in the box. You can add it after you see the tree lit at night.

Mini lights by tree height

Find your tree height in the left column. The middle column is the standard look. The right column is the fuller look. These are plain arithmetic on the per foot rule, so treat them as a starting point.

How to turn lights into strands and feet of lights

Light boxes list two numbers you need: how many lights are on the strand, and the lighted length. Spacing between bulbs differs from box to box, so do not guess the length. Read it.

Worked example for a 7 foot tree at the standard look: you need about 700 lights. If your box says 100 lights per strand, that is 7 strands. If it says 150 per strand, 700 divided by 150 is about 4.7, so buy 5 strands.

  1. Measure the tree height in feet, without the stand or topper.
  2. Multiply by 100 for a standard look or 150 for a fuller look.
  3. Read the number of lights printed on one box.
  4. Divide your total by that number and round up to get strands.
  5. Multiply strands by the lighted length on the box if you want total feet of lights.
  6. Check the box label for how many strands may be connected end to end before you plan your plugs.

Big bulbs and cluster lights are counted differently

The per foot rule is for mini lights. Larger C7 and C9 bulbs fill more space each, so a tree needs far fewer of them. One published figure for a 7 foot tree is 100 to 150 of these bigger bulbs. Check that against your box, since bulb size and spacing vary.

Cluster LED strands pack many small bulbs close together on a short length. Here the light count on the box can mislead you, because the bulbs are bunched. For clusters, go by the lighted length on the box and how much of the tree it covers. Wrap one strand, step back, and judge from there.

How many strands can you connect?

Only the label on your lights can answer this. The maximum number of strands you can join end to end is set by the maker for that exact product, and it is printed on the box, the tag near the plug, or the instructions. LED and older incandescent strands often have very different limits, so do not carry a number over from last year's lights.

If your plan needs more strands than the label allows in one run, split them into two or more runs. Plug each run into its own outlet or a suitable extension cord. Do not mix different brands or types in one chain, and do not join LED strands to incandescent ones.

Questions

How many lights do I need for a 7 foot Christmas tree?
About 700 mini lights for a standard look, using 100 per foot. For a fuller, brighter tree, plan about 1,050 lights, using 150 per foot.
How many strands of lights for a 7 foot tree?
Divide 700 lights, or 1,050 for a fuller look, by the number of lights on one box and round up. A box of 100 lights would mean 7 strands for the standard look.
How many feet of lights do I need for a Christmas tree?
Work out the number of strands first, then multiply by the lighted length printed on the box. Bulb spacing varies between products, so the box is the only reliable source.
How many strands of Christmas lights can you connect together?
Check the label on your lights. The maker prints the maximum for that product, and it can differ a lot between LED and incandescent sets.
Do I need fewer lights for a slim tree?
Usually yes. Start at the 100 per foot figure and go no higher, then add a strand only if the tree looks dark after you light it at night.
